Recently, Canada  released its 2017 immigration plan which is the first under the leadership of Trudeau’s government. This plan seems to be beneficial towards Indian immigrants, and more Indians could migrate to Canada next year. So, let us explore Canada and opportunities available for Indians in this country.

Here is the list of territories in Canada which could be chosen by a candidate as their place of settlement for work and subsequent retirement.

As of the 2015 census, India was in the second position after Philippines as a source of immigrants to Canada. The Canadians in India are known as Indo Canadians or Indian Canadians. The total population of this community in the country is 1,355,653, that is 3.86% of the total Canadian Population in 2015.

Indians started moving to Canada in the early 20th century. They were primarily Sikhs from Punjab and were veterans of the British Army. Both India and Canada were the colonies of the British Empire and after retiring from the British army, many soldiers found that the pension they were getting was smaller as compared to their earning potential in Canada and chose to stay, instead of returning to India. Initially they had to confront racism, but today they have assimilated within the population and secured prominent positions throughout the political and economic spectrum.

Below are some Canadians with Indian origin who have occupied a prominent position in the Canadian Government.

Today, Sikhs from India forms the largest ethnic community in Canada. In Vancouver, they comprise of about 80% of the Indian population. The official languages of Canada are English and French and in 1980 most of Indian immigrants spoke neither of these languages. Due to globalization, presently 60% of the Indian migrants are English proficient upon entry.

Greater Vancouver (Surrey)

This Pacific Northwest region possesses booming computer and tech industries. Over the last decade, Surrey  has become one of the prime destinations for Indian immigrants, primarily due tothe business and job opportunities available in this region. It is quickly becoming a major player in the global market with a massive amount of career opportunities.

Calgary

The Calgary Metropolitan Area is home to the second-highest number of corporate head offices in Canada among the country's 800 largest corporations. It is also one of the cities where the majority of the Indian community resides, constituting 5% of the total Indian community in Canada. Indians have marked their presence in Canada by achieving outstanding success in different domains and making India proud.
