Recently, the Assistant Immigration Minister of Australia, Alex Hawke announced a slight change in the immigration policy of the country. The minister informed that the government of the country is planning to initiate discussions with public regarding continuous five-year visa for the elderly parents of the immigrants. The visa will be active from July 7th, 2017.
Hawke stated that they see great societal benefits in reuniting the three generation of families and that is why they are coming up with a temporary five year visa. He also mentioned that, “the Turnbull government will consult widely so that the setting for this visa enables the most options”.
The minister finds the present visa program to be incompetent and involves a huge waiting time which could even go up to 30 years because as per the current visa program for the parents of either Australians or permanent residents is divided in two prime streams.
The report released by the Productivity Commission suggests that the old parents of the immigrants cost too high to the country which would be in between $2.6 billion and $3.2 billion during their lifetime, and only after this report the announcement for visa would be made. As per the report, the contribution made by this group to the country was very poor. It is recommended by the commission to refurbish the visa scheme for the parents of the immigrants proposing changes associated with the families of the non-contributing parents are paid for any health support or any other income during their stay in Australia.
The coalition government promised for a five year visa system for the parents of the immigrants and Australian citizens, during their election campaign in June. At present the visa is offered on case to case basis to the candidates to the candidates who have filed an application for the permanent parental visa.
At present the visiting parents of Australian citizens and residents are allowed to stay in country for not more than 12 months.
