The Hong Kong government agreed to increase the quota for Hong Kong/Canada Working Holiday Scheme (WHS) from 200 to 300. The government of Hong Kong welcomes their youth to participate in the Scheme. Mr. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, the Secretary for Labour and Welfare views that this scheme has offered the youth a good opportunity to work while travelling abroad. This will develop their confidence and interpersonal skills. Until now more than 1200 youths from Hong Kong and 400 from Canada have participated in this scheme.
The Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), have agreed with the Government of Canada to increase the quota for 2016 and would see if further increase in the annual quota is required after reviewing the applications received under WHS. Ms Lynn McDonald, the Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong had also hailedthe increase in quota and expressed his views on this scheme. She mentioned that this is a popular scheme and would strengthen the relations between the two nations. The scheme has benefited the youths of Hong Kong working and living in Canada and Canadians in Hong Kong, both personally and skilfully.
The WHS is valid for the individuals holding a valid HKSAR or British National passport in the age group of 18-30 years and have not been benefited from this earlier could take advantage of this scheme. The maximum duration of this visa is 12 months, and in this duration the candidate could take up employment or any short term course.
As of now, the HKSAR Government has established WHS with 10 countries apart from Canada, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Korea, Ireland, UK, Austria and France and till now more than 70000 youths from Hong Kong has benefitted from this scheme.
The HKSAR government opened the doors for their youths to take advantage from WHS, but it also alerts the candidates to be thorough with their insurance policies and plans before departure. The Government of HKSAR alerts them to follow the local rules and regulation of the foreign country and should cautious while dealing with the employment terms and conditions to take necessary protection. In case of any mishap the applicant should approach to the local authorities for help.
